On Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2024, a Lunch & Learn event organized by the Heritage Center invited campus staff to delve into the history of the Nazareth Water Supply. This session focused on the evolution of the water supply on the campus and the role it played in sustaining the Community over the past two centuries.
The presentation, led by Heritage Center Director Kelly McDaniels, explored the early days when the Sisters first arrived in 1822 and relied on two natural springs for their water needs. One spring was located beneath the present-day St. Vincent de Paul Church, while the other was near the cemetery. In 1831, the Sisters built a spring house over one of the springs, a critical first step in managing the growing water demands of the campus. Over time, the campus expanded, and cisterns and wells were added to support the increasing number of residents and students.
In 1867, Peter’s Puddle, created during road construction, became a key feature of Nazareth and served various purposes, including as a recreational swimming spot in the late 20th century. Over the years, the Sisters expanded their water infrastructure, adding an above-ground reservoir in 1899 and Nazareth Lake in 1904. The introduction of steam heat in 1890 further increased water demand.
As the campus grew, droughts posed challenges, prompting the construction of additional lakes, including Immaculate Conception Lake (1921) and St. Joseph Lake (1936). The installation of a water purification plant in 1911 improved water quality. In 1978, Nazareth transitioned to Bardstown’s water system, though the Sisters continued practicing careful water management, especially during shortages like the 1981 drought.
This Lunch & Learn event is part of a broader history series hosted by the Heritage Center, which has previously covered topics such as the shrines, statues, and buildings on the Nazareth Motherhouse Campus.

Thank you for sharing this! Kelly did a great job! I learned a lot about our SCN history of water use on our campus.
Kelly gave a wonderful presentation. I was told be someone to be sure and watch this. So glad I did.
