The SCN Archival Center welcomes all to view our latest exhibit “Down on the Farm,” showcasing Nazareth’s historic farm.

In 1822, when the Sisters moved to the current Nazareth Campus, the farm was around 237 acres. In 1923, it grew to 1100 acres with 600 acres of tillable land. Crops grown on the farm included corn, grain, soy beans, alfalfa, hay, grapes, strawberries, peanuts, pumpkins, potatoes, and sweet potatoes. Livestock raised on the farm included cattle, pigs, chickens, turkey, and ducks.

Portions of the farm land were sold beginning in the 1970s, and eventually in the 1980s the property was sold and rezoned for a residential development now known as the neighborhood “Nazareth Farms.”

Memories of the heavenly fragrant orchard, buzzing with bees. linger today. So happy to see this display of farmland where tobacco and corn lined the entrance to Nazareth in the 50’s.

I was a student at Nazareth in the 1940’s and realize how fortunate we were to be fed with fresh produce right from the farm.
    Thank you for the memory.
