In February, volunteers visited Las Flores, Belize and San Miguel Arcangel Missions to build a home for Peter and his mother. Peter had been struck by various ailments and was unable to work. His sister was left to care for Peter and their mother, Maria, who is deaf, but they were living in very poor conditions.
The new home built by volunteers lifts a heavy burden from their lives. Below is a video of the experience shared by San Miguel Arcangel Missions.
This was the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth Lay Mission Volunteer Program’s first time working with San Miguel Arcangel Missions, a new nonprofit established in Las Flores by Mark and Cindy Rhonemus. The couple was inspired to further help the people in Las Flores after volunteering with the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth in Belize City and other areas in 2016, 2017 and 2018.
Sister Luke Boiarski, volunteer program director, encouraged them to visit Las Flores at the end of their 2018 trip, and they were overwhelmed by the need they saw. In 2022, after many prayers and donations, Mark and Cindy celebrated the construction of their mission house to host volunteers and visiting doctors and nurses, as well as meet other needs in the village.
What a noble gesture to provide a shelter for the homeless. Thank you, Volunteers, for your magnanimous contribution.
Oh how beautiful. Brought back good and happy memories of being in Las Flores. Thank you team for your dedication and hard work. I’m sure the family is very appropriative of the house but most of all the friendships developed.
