The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth and Nazareth employees held a reception on May 19 to honor the departing Western Leadership Team.

Sister Mary Elizabeth Miller, Western Province Provincial, and Vice Provincials, Sister Barbara Flores, and Sister Sharon Gray were thanked for their commitment to leading the province since 2017.

“Five years ago, you accepted the call to leadership, not foreseeing what the future might bring,” Sister Luke Boiarski told the leaders. “You had no way of knowing what joys, sorrows, challenges, and triumphs would unfold. Unfold they did, not only here at the Motherhouse in Bardstown but Louisville, Pittsburg, Massachusetts, and anywhere and everywhere our Sisters reside.”

“St. Vincent said, ‘Do what is before you,” and you did with each passing day,” Sister Luke added. “God will surely say, ‘Well done, good and faithful servants.’” After Sister Luke praised the leaders and expressed appreciation for their insight, knowledge, faith, and trust in God, Sister Linda Soltis read the “Blessing for Retirement” by John O’Donohue.

“It has been truly an honor and a privilege to serve in leadership,” Sister Mary Elizabeth said, adding most of the time was joyful except for the challenges of COVID-19.

Sister Barbara also called it a joy to work and serve alongside other leaders, Sisters, and others who support the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth mission.

“It just feels like we are family together, but it also feels like we are in mission together because of how you live the charism and because of who you are,” Sister Barbara said. “For that, I am deeply grateful working alongside Mary Elizabeth, Sharon, and each of you.”

Sister Sharon said the call to leadership is a call from the Community to carry out the mission and charism of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth.

“Leadership, I have found, invites us into an intimacy with the Sisters, an intimacy with the Congregation, and a deeper intimacy with what our charism really is,” she said. “I got to know that through you all, how you live every single day and how you call us forth every single day. … I am humbled to be able to call you my Sisters.”

The Sisters are passing on their responsibilities of leadership. Sister Michelle Grgurich and Sister Camille Panich have been chosen as Vice Provincials-elect. Sister Barbara will remain on the team, succeeding Sister Mary Elizabeth as Western Province Provincial. The new leadership team will be installed on May 29, 2022.
