This past week, July 7–11, the third annual Summer Bond Camp was held in Belize. Created by Dr. Carolyn Gentle-Genitty, the camp is her way of giving back to the community. It aims to inspire hope, build meaningful relationships, and encourage children to make positive choices.

Dr. Gentle-Genitty describes the camp as more than just a program — it is a vision nurtured with love, creativity, and purpose. The one-week, research-based camp is designed for 100 children, ages 7–11, from Southside Belize City. There were guest speakers each day to speak on topics what the children put on their form of what they want to be when they grow up.

The camp focuses on four key pillars:

  1. Service and Gratitude (Heart)
  2. Education (Mind)
  3. Sports (Body)
  4. Arts (Spirit)

Camp Guidelines

Campers are reminded of two general rules:

  1. Always ask yourself when making a decision: “Will this hurt me? Will it hurt others? Will it hurt someone’s property?” If the answer is yes, don’t do it.
  2. If you make a mistake, fix it by following the four A’s: Acknowledge, Admit, Apologize, and make Amends.

Nazareth Participation

LIFE and the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth participate in the camp annually to give back to the community. This year, we were privileged to have Sister Rekha join us. She assisted Sister Carlette with meal preparation, led Service and Gratitude sessions, and served as a team leader for Orange House.

Raksha Bandhan is a traditional Indian festival that celebrates the bond of love, care, respect, and protection between brothers and sisters. On this day, a sister traditionally ties a rakhi (a sacred or decorative thread) around her brother’s wrist. In return, the brother expresses his love and commitment to care for and support her. Gifts and sweets are also commonly exchanged.

This beautiful tradition was creatively and meaningfully celebrated by the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth in Vasai.
