Spalding Hurst
Director of Mission Advancement
Spalding Hurst serves as director of the Office of Mission Advancement for the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. He works with the Sisters and Leadership to advance the mission and strengthen engagement with supporters, donors, volunteers, and partners.
Since 2008, he has supported the ministries of the Sisters and helped expand community involvement in their work. From Nazareth, Kentucky, the Office of Mission Advancement shares the story of the Congregation in clear, accessible ways that invite participation and support. The office oversees communications, development, donor relations, and outreach efforts that sustain the ministries of the Sisters in the United States and internationally.
Spalding and his wife, Jennifer, are Associates of the Congregation and participate in the life of the Community in that role. His work is rooted in a long relationship with the Sisters and a shared commitment to their mission.
He also enjoys time with his family, travel, and river adventures.

Give for Good
Help the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth build a safe home for Javier, Ana, Jose and Deisy in Belize. A group of Louisville students will travel with Sister Amina Bejos to help construct the home in honor of Sister Edna Fabre, whose ministry inspired generations of young women to put compassion into action. Your gift will purchase the lumber, concrete, roofing, doors, windows and other essential materials needed to make this family’s long-awaited home possible.
Sisters Plan Response to Nepal Glacier Collapse
Sisters of Charity of Nazareth are working with partners in Nepal to assess damage and provide assistance after catastrophic flooding destroyed homes, farmland and infrastructure in the Dhading district. The glacial collapse near Nepal’s border triggered flooding whose effects have reached vulnerable communities far beyond the area where the disaster began.
A Joyful New Beginning for the SCN Mission in Kenya
The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth joyfully welcomed Callen Nyaboki as the first candidate from Kenya to begin a journey of discernment with the congregation. This milestone in the history of the SCN mission in Kenya was celebrated with a prayer service Sept. 1, 2026.
Sister Mukta Advocates for Migrant Workers
Sister Mukta Marandi urged stronger legal protections for migrant workers during a regional gathering in Burdwan, West Bengal. She encouraged greater knowledge of labor laws and access to benefits, compensation and emergency assistance as dioceses plan Migrant Resource Centers across Bengal and Sikkim in India.
Landmark Victory for Women
Sister Joicy, a Sister of Charity of Nazareth and legal advocate in India, helped a mother escaping domestic violence challenge a barrier facing Christian women seeking divorce. Her efforts led to a Kerala High Court ruling allowing women to file for divorce where they live, expanding access to justice.
Hope in Mississippi
Nearly a decade after the deaths of Sister Paula Merrill and Sister Margaret Held, their ministry continues through the people and places of Holmes County, Mississippi.
Burned, Not Broken
After surviving a brutal acid attack, 13-year-old Sajitha is rebuilding her life with support from Joicy Joy, SCN, and the Pratiksha Centre in India. Through legal advocacy, emergency assistance, and ongoing accompaniment, the Sisters are helping her family pursue justice and look toward the future with hope.

For 18 years, Sister Luke Boiarski, has brought people together across cultures and communities through prayer, service and relationships. As she prepares to retire from the SCN Lay Mission Volunteer Program, Sister Luke reflects on the people, unexpected journeys, and shared experiences that shaped a ministry reaching around the world.
Embrace Life
A handwritten note on Sister Connie Tarallo’s desk offers a window into her life: “Embrace the life you have, even if it is not the one you imagined.” After six decades as a Sister and the recent loss of her right leg, she lives those words through gratitude, community and love.
Culture Has a Long Memory
Across Jharkhand, drums sounded, dancers moved and young people celebrated the cultures that shaped their communities. For World Indigenous Peoples’ Day, students joined Sisters, teachers and neighbors to honor Adivasi identity through music, dance, art and storytelling, carrying traditions rooted in generations past into the lives of a new generation.
Summer Bond Camp
Another successful year of Summer Bond Camp was held in Belize City at Swift Hall, St. Martin’s. The week-long camp served 100 children, ages 7–11, from the Southside community, with the support and dedication of 40 volunteers
Stitch by Stitch
Help these Sisters keep stitching. They need worsted-weight acrylic or cotton yarn in bright or variegated colors to create protective sleeves that help preserve water filters, providing clean drinking water to families around the world. Miss Kentucky’s Teen Shares Mission of Resilience
Laken Blanford of Bardstown, Miss Kentucky’s Teen 2026, visited the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth on Thursday, July 9, to share the story behind her nonprofit, The Resilience Project, and discuss its mission of helping children overcome trauma through meaningful opportunities.
Sewing New Beginnings
Women affected by gender violence struggle to find work and rebuild their lives. At Navjyoti Center Surkhet, the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth provided tailoring training while the municipality donated sewing machines. Together, they are helping 10 women gain income, confidence, independence and hope for the future.
Bringing Health Care to Migrant Workers
Migrant workers in Bangalore face barriers to health care because of low wages, long work hours and limited access to medical services. Sisters joined partners to provide free health screenings, medicines and referrals for more than 400 workers, with additional clinics planned to continue serving this vulnerable community.
