The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth have been awarded a $2,500 grant, which will help improve dining experiences and socialization for Sisters residing in the nursing unit of Carrico Hall.

The grant was awarded through the 2024 HPS Members First Grant program, which funds initiatives that positively impact the communities it serves. HPS is a group purchasing organization that helps members save money by procuring products at the best market prices.

“HPS aspires to help communities by helping our members fulfill their missions. This grant program is another avenue for us to do just that,” said Thomas LaPres, president and CEO of HPS, who traveled to Nazareth on May 16 to deliver the grant award personally. In a letter announcing the award, LaPres said the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth’s project was a standout request.

Sister Jacky Jesu, president of the Congregation, thanks Thomas LaPres, president and CEO of HPS, for visiting Nazareth last week to deliver a grant award.

“We have no doubt that through your vision, creativity, and never-ceasing commitment to your residents, you will have a long-term, positive impact on many lives,” LaPres wrote. “Everyone here at HPS is inspired and proud to be associated with you.”

The grant will help fund the three-floor renovation of Carrico Hall. Currently housing 40 Sister residents, the facility expects more residents in the future. The renovation will expand common areas on each floor to accommodate residents using wheelchairs and walkers. A new dining area will be created with this expansion. This will improve access for residents who cannot travel to the larger campus dining room, ensuring they receive proper nutrition and social interaction.

Food Services Director Greta Samuels leads a tour of the current dining spaces in Carrico Hall, which will be expanded with the help of a grant awarded from HPS.

The Sisters’ grant application emphasized the need for this project, focusing on improving the dietary program experience. The funds will purchase additional meal carts and conduction meal plates, aiding the Food Service Department’s role in the renovation. Combined with the Congregation’s budget, these improvements will enhance living conditions and quality of life for the Sisters.
