On Sunday, Aug.14, 2022, Saint Lawrence Church in Philpot, Ky., celebrated “200 years of Faith, Families and Fellowship.” A few Sisters of Charity of Nazareth were present for the celebration.

Pictured above enjoying the picnic lunch after the Liturgy are (standing) Maggie Cooper, SCN; Father Augusty Valomchalil, pastor of St. Mary Magdalene in Sorgho; Rena Fernandes, SCN; Western Province Vice Provincial Camille Panich, SCN; Bishop William Medley, Bishop of the Owensboro Diocese. Seated are Father Shijo Vadakumkara, pastor of St. Lawrence, and Mary Eula Johnson, SCN.

The first Catholic Mass in Daviess County was offered in a private home and the Parish traces its roots to that event. The first log church was built around 1831 on property that had been sold to Bishop Flaget “to encourage a respectable Catholic settlement.” St. Lawrence is the first Catholic Church in Daviess County. There have been seven SCNs from the Parish. SCNs Mary Eula Johnson and Shirley Anne Howe still have relatives at Saint Lawrence.
