SCN Middle East Statement

On February 28, the Loretto Community invited women religious and others from the area to present Senator McConnell with a statement regarding the Middle East situation. The following was written and shared with Senator McConnell, Senator Paul, and President Biden.

As Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, the love of Christ impels us to commit ourselves to work for peace in solidarity with oppressed peoples. It is with this belief that:

  • we condemn the violence in the Israel – Palestine area and the threat it poses to the Middle East region;
  • we condemn the taking of innocent lives and the devastation to families;
  • we condemn the lack of basic needs that cannot be addressed until humanitarian aid has a corridor;
  • we condemn the holding of hostages by Hamas; and
  • we condemn anti-Semitism and Islamophobia that has increased throughout the world.

We pray for a peaceful end to war, for the immediate release of all hostages and for all suffering due to the inhumanities and violence that is the reality of war.

We urge an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, the return to negotiations that include a two-state solution and urge the United Nations to investigate all war crimes and violations of international humanitarian law from the war’s commencing.

    It is so very rewarding as a regular donor to see our sisters take such a vocal stand. May God be with you in these endeavors. It is impossible to accurately express my anger at our government’s stance on supporting the government of Israel in this war.

    It is high time we raised our voices to the never ending war between Israel and Palestine. May peace prevail.

    I am glad we SCNs have taken this proactive step.
    I had the opportunity to listen to a few persons from Palestine on the situation there. It was sad to hear that Bible, the Old Testament is quoted to justify ..the word of God misquoted to justify their position by Israel

    What a balanced statement this is! I particularly appreciate the last statement condemning both anti-Semitism and Islamophobia. Thank you
    for making it public.
