A Gift of Opportunity

She was three years old when her mother died. Manisha was sent to be raised by an aunt and uncle. Like other girls in the remote area of Shahpur, India, she stayed at home, helped with household tasks, worked in the fields, and tended animals because the education of girls was considered a waste of money.

When Sister Marina Thazhathuveettil became aware of this young girl, who at the age of 10 had never been to school, she did all that was necessary to help Manisha be admitted to the Navjyoti School and Hostel in Shahpur. This ministry of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth is dedicated to the education of children. The Sisters care for over 100 girls, ages five through 13, at the hostel. Each girl is given the opportunity to receive a well-rounded, high-quality education in a safe, wholesome environment.

Despite initial difficulties as a student, Manisha completed her studies at Navjyoti and went on to graduate from high school as well as to complete specialized training as a Montessori teacher. Today, Manisha is an empowered, self-sufficient young woman, teaching at a Catholic school.

The story of Manisha is similar to the stories of countless other children, especially girls, who blossom and thrive with opportunity and encouragement.
