“Blessed are those who look into the eyes of the abandoned and marginalized and show them their closeness.”

-Pope Francis

As Sister Lilly loaded her jeep with 10 sacks of cement, she thought of the long drive on unpaved mountain roads and of the people she would visit. She thought especially of Jyotsna, who would receive the supplies. Jyotsna is a single mother who has been living in a makeshift shelter with her three children and is now relieved and happy that the Nongstoin Social Service Society (NSSS) is currently building a simple home for them.

Sister Lilly, a social worker, is also the assistant director of NSSS. She is responsible for the outreach program in 22 parishes of the diocese. Her companions in ministry, Sisters Dolsie and Reema, teach at the village school. These three pioneering missionaries are committed to empowering women and girls and providing educational opportunities throughout seven local villages.

Sisters of Charity of Nazareth have been ministering among the Khasi people in Nongstoin, a village of northeastern India, since 2018. To communicate with the people, the Sisters needed to learn a new language and new customs. They admit that their days are full and challenging, yet they are happy to be extensions of God’s love to those in need.

Currently, the Sisters rent a two-room tin hut that leaks when it rains. They have experienced a few break-ins, which is a further concern for their safety and well-being.

With your help, the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth plan to raise $73,000 to construct a convent. Built on land donated by the diocese, this home will provide Sisters Lilly, Dolsie, and Reema with the shelter and security they need to thrive in their ministry

During the past three years, the Sisters have laid a foundation of trust and compassion by their presence in the area. In March, the cornerstone for their convent home was laid and blessed. Will you help us build upon this foundation?

Whatever gift you can offer will be gratefully and joyfully received. Your prayers are equally important in providing this invaluable shelter of support.
