The (Nebraska) branch of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas (CDA), a national organization for Catholic women, will be sending their yearly collection of used stamps to Kentucky in June.

West Point resident Marlene Knobbe, the former Regent of the local Catholic Daughters, gathers the collected stamps twice a month and stores them at her house until June. Then, once a year, she sends them to Sister Miriam Ann Walter with The Nazareth Sisters of Charity Stamp Ministry in Nazareth, Ky.

This project has just recently come back from an extended hiatus. Daniel Nesladek, the son of a CDA regent, asked Knobbe three years ago if the CDA were still collecting stamps.

“I asked Marlene one time how many [stamps] she got, and she said a few shoe boxes,” he said. “When you cut out stamps and are able to fill a box like that, it really adds up. I’ll take a little bag of the ones I cut out once in a while to donate.”CD

Knobbe did some digging after her talk with Nesladek and found Sister Miriam’s motivating story.

“When I looked it up, I found the story about Sister Miriam Ann Walter,” Knobbe said. “I loved her attitude, spunk and her mission at age (98) plus. The goals of the Catholic Daughters are to grow in faith and to do service for others, so when Dan mentioned the project, I thought it would be a great service project to bring back!”

Background on Nazareth’s Stamp Ministry

Sister Miriam Ann Walter has dedicated over 25 years to the Stamp Ministry, a project where she collects and sorts used stamps to raise funds for various charitable missions. Her work has involved receiving donations of stamps from all over the world, which she meticulously cut, sorted, and packaged for sale to collectors. The proceeds from this endeavor support the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth’s missions, aiding efforts in serving the poor and marginalized.

Wonderful! I save stamps for Sister and love taking them to Nazareth and seeing her smiling face.
