Meet Sister of Charity of Nazareth, Helen Carbol

Born of Czechoslovak and Polish parents, Helen Carbol, SCN, was the oldest of six children, hardworking since childhood. She was a “go-getter,” taking care of her family in a very resourceful way. When her father died at the age of 47, she continued her work as a bookkeeper and shop worker for a furnace company so that her mother could stay in the home with the other children.

The Pittsburgh Community of Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, along with the residents of Vincentian Villa and Terrace, participated in a food drive to honor St Vincent’s words  “…to serve the poor is to go to God.” Over 40 bags filled to the brim were delivered to North Hills Community Outreach Food Bank along with a check for $325 to continue their service to the poor.

The occasion also honored six Sisters who were celebrating over 400 years of combined dedicated service to the poor in the spirit of St. Vincent.
