May Crowning: A Dream Fulfilled

At 93 years old, Rose Andrew Waller, SCN, experienced a dream come true that she had long thought impossible. Chosen to crown Mary at the Nazareth Home’s May Crowning ceremony, her emotions ranged from excited to humbled and deeply honored.

Sister Rose Andrew shared how she had always dreamed of crowning Mary but was often passed over as a child. “As a kid, we had statues of the Blessed Mother in the yard,” she recalled. “I used to gather white clover flowers and tie them together to make a crown. I would crown Mary in front of my family.” Despite these cherished memories, she never imagined that she would have the opportunity to participate in an official ceremony, especially at her age.

While Sister Rose Andrew was saddened that her biological family could not be there to witness the ceremony, she was grateful for the presence of her Sisters from the SCN Community, her close friend Mary, and several former students she had taught at Holy Family.

Significantly, Sister Rose Andrew was the first “outsider,” meaning non-resident, to be chosen for this honor at Nazareth Home. This made the event even more special for her. “It’s like a dream that never came true and all of a sudden, it was true!” she exclaimed.

For Sister Rose Andrew, Mary has always been more than a religious figure; she has been a personal motherly presence, especially since the passing of her own mother. “Mary is my Mother. More so now that my mother is gone. She has always been my mother, but I have been more close to Mary since my Mother has died. She is someone I can talk to, pray with, and hash things out with,” she shared. Her deep devotion is reflected in her daily practices, such as greeting a statue of Mary on her way to breakfast each morning. She and Sr Margaret Lillian Davenport pray with Mary every day and when they get fresh flowers, they give them to Mary.

The ceremony was an emotional and joyous occasion, leaving Sister Rose Andrew on “cloud nine” for days afterward. Nazareth Home’s Pastoral Care staff presented her with a picture from the service, which her friend Mary had framed for her.

Joan McGee, the Pastoral Care Associate at Nazareth Home Highlands, who selected Sister Rose Andrew for the honor, expressed how perfect the choice had been. “The Holy Spirit tells us we know we picked the right one,” she said.

So happy for you Sr. Rose. I too, when I attended Holy Family grade school, 1950-1958 wanted to be chosen to crown our Blessed Mother but it wasn’t meant to be. So glad you got the opportunity. It’s never too late. May God grant you many blessings.
