Sister Mary Christopher entered the Congregation of the Vincentian Sisters of Charity from Saint Anthony Parish in Johnstown, New York in 1951.

She received her B.Ed. from Duquesne University and her M.A. degree from Saint Thomas College and served the Church as an elementary and high school teacher in the Dioceses of Pittsburgh and Greensburg, Pennsylvania and Mobile, Alabama.

Sister Mary Christopher also ministered in the health care profession at Vincentian Home and Vincentian de Marillac. In 1984, she became a certified medical records coder and worked at the Falk Clinic and Presbyterian and Jefferson Hospitals. Because of health reasons she retired in 2006, but continued to serve the Sisters as a Community driver and Sacristan aide.

Sister Mary Christopher was preceded in death by her parents Augustine and Theresa Zayicek, and her brothers Frank, Rudolph, Augustine, and Andrew, and her sisters Helen, Margaret and Lucy. She is survived by her sisters Patricia Vjelica and Agnes Sahut, nieces and nephews, and her Sisters in Community.

Sister Mary Christopher taught me in sixth grade at St. Ursula’s Elementary in Allison Park, PA. I can still hear her alto voice she used to get us to sing verious reglious songs.

She clearly had a special impact in my life and even now in my early seventies I often think about her. Above all, she displayed her real self and had no other way to live her life.

I wish I had made more of an effort to visit her over the years.
