Mary Burns, SCN, 88, was born in Louisville, KY. She died at Nazareth Home, Louisville, KY, on Monday, October 30, 2017. She had been a professed Sister of Charity of Nazareth for 67 years.

Sister Mary enjoyed learning. As a child she dreamed of becoming a teacher, often playing school with her nine siblings. Her education included a focus on English, Philosophy, and Physics. She received a Master’s Degree in Mathematics from St. Louis University and a Doctorate in Education from the University of Cincinnati.

Beginning in 1950 she served in education ministries at schools in Covington and Paducah, KY; and Mt. Vernon and Dennison, OH. From 1974-2000, she served in ministry at Spalding University in Louisville, as the Chair of the Education Department, and as the Dean of the School of Education. After retiring from Spalding, she served as a consultant, helping colleges prepare for national certification.

Sister Mary served her SCN Community as a board member of NLBI (Nazareth Literary and Benevolent Institution) and the SCN Committee for Corporate Responsibility, among others.

She is survived by her sister, Charles Mary Burns, SCN; her devoted friend Theresa Beaumont; her many nieces and nephews; and her religious community.

Visitation will be held at Nazareth Home on Thursday, November 2 from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. The body will be received at 4:00 p.m. in St. Vincent Church at Nazareth, KY, with a Prayer Service at 6:30 p.m.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, November 3 in St. Vincent Church, Nazareth, KY. Burial will be in Nazareth Cemetery.
