If you have a passion for environmental sustainability and a desire to make a difference, AmeriCorps and the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth have the perfect opportunity for you.

As an Ecological Sustainability Program Assistant, you’ll work alongside the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth in their mission to care for the earth. You’ll help restore and steward native ecosystems, educate the community about sustainable practices, and promote environmental awareness.

Located in Nazareth, Kentucky, the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth are an international congregation of women who work for justice and care for the earth. The Nazareth campus consists of 300 acres, including landscaped areas surrounding historic buildings and forested natural areas with aquatic habitats. The Sisters have pledged to develop a sustainable relationship with the earth and collaborate with others in this urgent task.

As the Ecological Sustainability Program Assistant, you’ll have the opportunity to work in community engagement and education, natural areas management, and research and program development. You’ll lead workshops and educational sessions, develop educational materials, and facilitate outreach programs to the local community. You’ll also remove invasive plant species on campus, collect and track greenhouse gas emissions, research sustainable and regenerative practices, and build relationships with community members and stakeholders.

To qualify for this position, you should be a team player and good communicator with a flexible attitude and eagerness to learn. You should have a strong interest in environmental stewardship and conservation, be physically active and able to lift at least 30 lbs., and be willing to work in all weather conditions. You should also be willing to interact inter-generationally and inter-culturally, teach and lead others in environmental education, handle and store herbicides in a responsible manner, and prioritize and handle multiple tasks.

This AmeriCorps position requires a commitment of 1,700 hours of service per year, with a pre-tax living allowance of $17,600 and a $7,395 education award to apply towards student loans or future education. Furnished housing accommodations are available for a suggested monthly contribution, and weekday lunches are provided.
