Fostering Hope to the Elderly

January 10, 2024

Christmas is usually associated with the festive decorations used to spruce up homes, streets, and public spaces, culminating in an energetic and lively atmosphere. It also profoundly entails emphasizing the true meaning of sharing, giving, and caring.

On Dec. 18, 2023, the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth of Nazareth School, Chandapura, took students to celebrate Christmas with the elderly at SH Bhavan, a retirement home in Attebele, Bangalore. Students gained insight into the lives of the elderly by engaging with them and hearing their experiences. Their personal stories inspired them to sing Christmas carols, bringing joy to those on the verge of passing.

The students observed that many elderly people live alone, without the assistance of family or friends at this phase of their lives. During this memorable visit, students gave food and sang carols, fostering empathy, compassion, and envisaging the stark sense of how fragile life is. Their visit gave joy to the elderly who had been waiting for someone to spend time with them and listen to their stories.
