In Kenya, in the Diocese of Malindi, children ages four to 14 in the Pontifical Missionary Childhood (PMC) are actively engaged in various activities throughout the year, including prayers, catechism classes, art education, and cultural events. The theme for PMC in 2024 is “Together in Prayer.” On weekends and during long holidays, the children come together to strengthen their love for God and build friendships through faith-formation activities. They also participate in competitions at the parish, denary, and diocesan levels, with winners advancing from the parish to the denary and diocesan levels.

On Aug. 23, one such event was held at Marafa, a parish in the Marafa Denary where the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth serve. The animators and Sister coordinators of PMC were deeply involved in organizing and preparing the children for the event. Sister Helan Sathiya and Sister Reema Tigga, along with other PMC animators from Gongoni Parish, were fully committed to preparing the children for this significant occasion. All five parishes of the denary gathered at Marafa, bringing together about 400 children, 20 coordinators, three adjudicators, priests, and religious from the denary.

The day began with the Holy Eucharist, which was celebrated by Fr. Dominic Odhiambo, the chaplain of the PMC at the denary level. His homily emphasized God’s love and the importance of trusting in him. Following the Eucharist, various cultural competitions took place. Children from the five parishes of Marafa Denary participated in events such as a catechism quiz, choral recitation, solo verse, self-composed songs, traditional dance, drama, and a set piece on the theme “Together in Prayer.” The event was vibrant, with children confidently showcasing their talents. The traditional dances, in particular, captivated the audience and drew them into the rhythm.

Children from Gongoni Parish participated in several categories, including the catechism quiz, choral recitation, drama, set pieces, and traditional dance. They earned second place in some events and received certificates. Although they were disappointed not to win a first prize, which would have qualified them to receive the trophy and advance to the diocesan level, the adjudicators praised their performances and encouraged them to strive for improvement in the future. The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth and animators were proud of the children from Gongoni Parish for their efforts and enthusiasm, and they look forward to performing even better next year.
