This summer, the Gazebo at Nazareth becomes a hub of rhythmic harmony and spiritual reflection. From June 18 to August 6, every Tuesday evening from 7 to 8 p.m, the Drum Song event invites individuals to gather and share an hour of simple melodies, soft drum tones, and creative expression.

Hosted by the Nazareth Retreat Center and led by Maggie Hettinger, Stephanie Robinson, and Tonya Severin, SCN, Drum Song welcomes participants of all ages and abilities. With voices, hand drums, and other simple instruments, a unique musical experience is created.

Hettinger, with her extensive background in music education and experience as an organist at St. Vincent de Paul Church, brings a wealth of knowledge and spirit to the event. Robinson, a talented vocalist, offers vibrant energy and appreciation for communal music-making. Sister Tonya, well-known for her musical contributions on campus as a cantor and choir member, adds a spiritual connection.

Each session begins with a simple melody and evolves into a forum where participants are encouraged to add their own artistic expressions. This week, as the sun set over the Nazareth grounds, a chorus of “Yonder Come Day” echoed through the campus, harmonizing with the hum of insects. The rhythmic beats of the drums intertwined with the voices of those gathered, weaving a tapestry of sound.

Whether you are a seasoned musician or simply looking for a summer evening activity, Drum Song offers a space for reflection, connection, and celebration for all. For more information about future events, visit nazarethretreatcenterky.org. The next Drum Song will be held from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 9. Inclement weather cancels.

The newly blessed Grotto of Our Lady of Mokama at Nazareth Bhawan, Sokho, is a sacred sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin Mary. This serene grotto was meticulously designed to provide a peaceful place for prayer and reflection. The grotto is built from local stone and with the waste materials available on the campus, giving it a timeless and natural appearance. Upon entering the grotto, people are enveloped in a sense of calm and reverence.  Re. Father Martin Murmu, the parish priest of Sokho, blessed the grotto in the presence of our staff and our neighbors.
