Supporting the Disaster Relief for Farm Workers Act

The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth are proud to endorse the Disaster Relief for Farm Workers Act. If implemented, this bill would provide disaster relief for farm workers suffering from disasters like extreme heat, droughts, wildfires, earthquakes, and pandemics, which have become far too common and disproportionally impact farm workers.

Why This Act Matters

Farm workers face extreme challenges from natural disasters such as heatwaves, droughts, wildfires, earthquakes, and pandemics. These hardships disproportionately impact their lives and livelihoods. The Disaster Relief for Farm Workers Act seeks to provide essential support to these workers, ensuring they receive the aid they need during such crises.

As recommended by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)’s Equity Commission, the Disaster Relief for Farm Workers Act would address this problem by providing disaster relief funding for farm workers. Specifically, this bill would:

  • Make grants available to eligible farm worker organizations to provide emergency relief to farm workers affected by a disaster.
  • Ensure USDA develops and executes a promotional plan before and throughout the distribution of the relief grants to increase awareness of the assistance available.
  • Requires USDA to work with eligible farm worker organizations.
  • Provide definitions for a covered disaster, eligible farm worker organization, and migrant or seasonal farm worker.
  • Amend Section 2281 of the Food, Agriculture, Conservation, and Trade Act of 1990 to allow for emerency assistance for farm workers.

As followers of Christ, we are called to act with compassion and justice. The Gospel teaches us to care for the marginalized and oppressed, embodying the principles of dignity, integrity, and love for our neighbors. Supporting this Act aligns with our values, reflecting our commitment to our mission.

Let us work together in faith and action to support this important cause.
