Sept. 27, 2024, marked a significant moment in the history of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth’s presence in Kenya. Since arriving at Gongoni Parish, Malindi Diocese, in February 2021, the Sisters have received strong support from the local community. The Sisters believe this support can be formalized and strengthened by initiating the SCN Associate Program in Kenya.

Sisters invited six Catholic women from Marereni Village, where they reside, to join them for a Eucharistic celebration on Sept. 27 as an introduction to the feast of St. Vincent, the Congregation’s patron saint. These women have been closely connected to the Sisters and their ministries. They were given a brief explanation of the Associate Relationship. Over October and November, the women will undergo orientation to discern whether they wish to become candidates for the program. If they choose to apply, they will do so by the end of the year, with formal formation beginning early next year. The two-year formation process for Associates is already in place in Kenya.

The women expressed gratitude for the opportunity. Emma Mundu, said, “Sisters, I consider this invitation a special privilege, and I do not take it for granted.”

After the Eucharist, the group shared a meal with a mix of Kenyan and Indian flavors, symbolizing the international spirit of the gathering. The Sisters were also joined by Callen Nyaboke, a prospective candidate for the SCN way of life, who is currently pursuing a three-year teaching diploma.

Sisters in Kenya are thankful for God’s blessings and express gratitude to the Congregation for its support and prayers. They seek the intercession of St. Vincent and Mother Catherine as they move forward with their mission in Kenya.
