Arrangements for Sister Betty

Elizabeth Betty” Boone, SCN, 89 (formerly Sister Teresita) was born Feb. 3, 1934, in Howardstown, Ky., to Clarence and Mary Ellen “Nell” Cissell Boone. She died on October 8, 2023, at Nazareth Home, Louisville, Ky. She was a professed Sister of Charity of Nazareth for 66 years.

Sister Betty’s earliest ministries were in elementary education. She taught at St. Gabriel in Fern Creek, Kentucky, from 1956-1962, followed by schools in Maryland, Tennessee, and Kentucky, where she taught first through sixth grade until 1978.

In 1978, Sister Betty studied at Loyola Pastoral Institute in Chicago. She then served as a pastoral associate at St Joseph Hospital in Lexington, Ky. She also served as a social worker at Sister Visitor Center. Sister Betty returned to education, serving as a substitute teacher for Jefferson County Public Schools and in adult education at St. Augustine Parish in Louisville and Kentuckiana Metroversity. After studying holistic living, Sister Betty became a massage therapist in 1993.

From 1997 to 2015, Sister Betty served in volunteer ministry in Louisville until she retired to the Nazareth Villages, Nazareth, Kentucky. In 2019, she moved to Carrico Hall at Nazareth, where she was in the ministry of prayer until 2022, when she moved to Nazareth Home in Louisville.

She is preceded in death by her siblings: Lillian Boone Rogers, Elsie Boone, Clarence Boone, and Bill Boone. She is survived by her sister Helen Boone Greenwell of New Haven, Kentucky, by several nieces and nephews and her extended family, and by her religious community, the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth.

Sister Betty’s cremains arrived at Nazareth on Thursday, Oct. 12, at 9:30 a.m. The funeral Mass was held Thursday, Oct. 12, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Vincent Church, Nazareth, Ky. Burial followed in the Nazareth Cemetery.
