Alice Mulavelipuram, SCN, (formerly known as Alice M.K.), was born in Lakkattoor, Kottayam, Kerala, on June 23, 1953, to Korah M.K. and Annamma Karumnat. She was the third child of five children. Being born in a middle-class, devout family, Sister Alice grew up in a simple, hardworking, and prayerful family atmosphere that helped her to learn many values such as prayer, honesty, integrity, care of the poor, hard work, and sharing.

With a deep desire to serve God as a missionary in North India, Alice M.K. left for Mokama, Bihar, in June 1972 after completing her pre-degree studies at BCM College, Kottayam. She was known for her simplicity and cheerfulness throughout her formation years. She made her First Profession on Oct. 1, 1976, and Perpetual Vows on Feb. 1, 1984. Alice was a professed Sister of Charity of Nazareth for 47 years.

Alice’s first mission was in Chatra to serve in pastoral ministry. Before long, the province leadership called upon her to assist in the Province Office in Mokama.

In 1979, she began her training in nursing education at Nazareth Hospital, Mokama, and on completion of her studies served for a short time as a community health nurse in Bakhthiarpur. In 1987, she did training in Medical Lab Technology at Holy Family Hospital, Delhi. On completion, Alice worked as Supervisor of the Laboratory at Nazareth Hospital, Mokama until 1994. She served as a Community Health Nurse in Lupunguttu, Chaibasa twice at different times.

After earning a degree in Post Basic Nursing from Chandigarh in 1998, she served as a tutor at Nazareth School of Nursing until 2000. She felt the call then, to respond to a greater need of the Province, serving again as Supervisor of Lab in Nazareth Hospital Mokama, this round for 23 years, until May 2024. Alice, however, longed to serve in the socio-health field in the rural areas of the SCN mission and moved to Kutuderi, Mahuadanr for just two months when God called her home and she left in a hurry for her eternal reward on that Saturday.

For most of her life as an SCN, 38 years or so, Alice lived, studied nursing, and served in Nazareth Hospital, Mokama. She loved the SCN community and mission responding to the needs of the SCN mission selflessly seeking what pleased God, rather than her own personal desires. Throughout her SCN life, she was known for her simplicity and cheerfulness, and love for the very poor. She was person-oriented and greeted everyone with warmth, gentle grace, and affection. On her last day in the hospital this Friday, her face sparkled with her usual bright smile, concern, and gratitude for the Sisters and others who cared for her until she breathed her last breath. Her unexpected passing is a shock, leaving many of us in tears.

Sisters in Kutuderi (her local community) shared that Alice acted as though she was saying goodbye to them, each Sister, and staff and handing over things in a meticulous way. She expressed that she would not be going back.

We take comfort and strength in our faithful God who has called her home, that she is smiling and enjoying the eternal bliss.

Alice, you will be missed by the SCNs and all those who loved you dearly. We are grateful to you, dear Alice for the way you have inspired us and touched our lives.

May you continue to inspire us to enter each day with a generous heart to live and serve God in faithful love until we see your smiling face again in that land where all tears will be wiped away. You will always be in our hearts and prayers. We love you, Alice.

Thank you for making it possible for us who are so far away to take part in Alice’s funeral. I was so deeply touched by the ritual of everyone blessing her at the end of the Mass. I have never seen this action of love in any funeral that I have every attended. Sharing this custom has certainly enriched me.
